Irapuato, the second largest city in the Mexican state of Guanajuato, is known for its strawberry production and unfortunately, a history of mass shootings in nightclubs. Despite its smaller size compared to other cities on the list, it is far from safe. With approximately 95 murders per 100,000 inhabitants, the city has been heavily affected by the activities of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel. The local police have struggled to control the situation, relying on federal authorities who have faced similar challenges in combating the escalating violence.
6. Ensenada, Mexico
Ensenada, a town with a population of approximately 280,000, may be smaller in size, but it is plagued by violence. Turf conflicts between three rival cartels – Sinaloa, Jalisco New Generation, and Arellano Felix Organization – have contributed to its high homicide rate of 90.58 per 100,000 residents. In addition to the ongoing dangers, Ensenada is also known for its involvement in the illegal drug trade and human trafficking.
